Nye County, Clark County and Lincoln County are now accepting applications from residents of Assembly District 36 interested in filling the vacant seat. The application must be submitted to one of the three counties before noon on November 26. All three counties will share applications submitted and select from the same pool of candidates.
The seat became vacant when deceased candidate Dennis Hof won the race for State Assembly District 36 on Tuesday. The appointee will serve the full two-year term.
Applicants must reside in District 36, and be a registered Republican, as state law requires vacancies be filled by someone of the same political party as the elected legislator.
Prospective applicants who are unsure if they live in State Assembly District 36 may check the district boundaries on the state legislative website at
www.leg.state.nv.us/Division/Research/Districts/Reapp/2011/Final/Assembly/ASM2011_District36.pdf or www.leg.state.nv.us/Division/Research/Districts/Reapp/2011/Final/Assembly/ASM2011_District36_11x17.pdf.
Once the application period closes, County staff will review the submitted applications to ensure that candidates meet the qualifications for the office. Then a list of qualified applicants and their applications will be forwarded to members of the three County Commissions.
The Lincoln County Commission is expected to select a candidate during its regular meeting on December 3. The Clark County Commission is expected to select a candidate during its regular meeting on December 4.
Nye County Commission is planning a special meeting on December 5 to make its selection.
A joint meeting will then be held, tentatively planned for Friday, December 7, to make the final appointment.
Under state law, the value of the votes from each county commission will be weighted to match the population distribution of each county within the assembly district as of the last U.S. census. In Assembly District 36, almost 64 percent of the population resides in Nye County, about 34 percent lives in Clark County, and about 3 percent resides in Lincoln County.
Applications can be obtained in Nye County at the Nye County Administration office located at 2100 E. Walt Williams Dr. Suite #100, Pahrump, NV 89048 or from our website, www.nyecounty.net/310/administration. They can be submitted by mail, hand delivery or emailed to email@example.com
