[ARCHIVED] County recognizes today as PURPLE HEART DAY

Today, August 7, 2017, is PURPLE HEART DAY in the United States, Nevada and here in Nye County, as proclaimed by the County Commission during their meeting last week.

Accepting the proclamation in Tonopah on behalf of Purple Heart recipients in central and northern Nye County were Purple Heart recipients Hep Klemm, center left, and Wade Lieske, center right. Commission Chairman Dan Schinhofen, left, and Vice-chairman, right, help present a copy of the proclamation. Recipient Dr. Tom Waters was on hand in Pahrump to receive a copy of the proclamation on behalf of recipients in Pahrump.

There have been six framed copies of the proclamation presented to various individuals and veteran groups in the county.

Text of Proclamation: 


WHEREAS, Nye County has long been a crucial home to the nation’s military defense, today with the Nevada Test and Training Range, and the Nevada National Security Site; and

WHEREAS, Nye is part of the “Battle Born” State of Nevada, and the county’s residents have selflessly accepted the responsibility to protect and defend our nation, the democratic principles it was founded upon, and the lives and liberties of men, women and children around the world; and

WHEREAS, President George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit to honor brave military personnel, and in 1932, on the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth, the badge was renamed the Order of the Purple Heart; and

WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to members of the armed forces of the United States military who are wounded in conflict with an enemy force, and posthumously, to the next of kin in the name of those killed in action or die of wounds received in action; and

WHEREAS, there have been many former Nye County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives in the cause of freedom, and there are those who have been awarded the Purple Heart who currently reside within Nye County; and

WHEREAS, Nye County is honored to recognize all military members who have served, or are currently serving, and is proud to recognize August 7, 2017 as a special tribute to those brave service members who have received the Purple Heart.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: the Nye County Board of County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim August 7, 2017, to be PURPLE HEART DAY in Nye County, Nevada.
